Ushio Shinohara - 65 years of Avant - GardeBorn in Tokyo Japan in 1932. Participated in the "Yomiuri Independent Exhibition" while he was student at Tokyo University of Art, and formed a period of Japanese Avant - Garde art. In 1960, he also formed the "Neo Dada Organizers" and was first Japanese to wear a Mohican hairstyle, striking the Japanese art world with unprecedented and radical performances. During this time he created works such as "Imitation art", "The Oiran Series" and they have became his pronominal works such as "Boxing Painting". In 1969, he moved to United States with the Rockefeller Scholarship. And began making works such as motorcycle sculptures using cardboard. We feel the symbol of violence and freedom, energy to break oppressed things. In 2013, a documentary film directed by Zachary Heinzerling, "Cutie and The Boxer" focused on the chaotic 40 years marriage of two artists Shinohara and his wife Noriko. This film won the Sundance Film Festival's best Documentary Director's Award. The following year, this film was nominated for the 86th Academy Awards 2014. In 2015, he was invited to "International Pop" at Walker Art Center Minneapolis Minnesota, Dallas Museum and Philadelphia Museum. In 2015, he exhibited at "The World Goes Pop" held at the Tate Modem in London. Ushio Shinohara's Three Principles, "be Fast, be Beautiful, and be Rhythmical". His evolving vigor continues to explode like an active volcano, even now at the age of 87. |
