Due to recent events in Japan, the month of August is particularly significant this year.
In August, two atomic bombs hit Japan; in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This event was tragic since numerous innocent people lost their lives and many more were severely injured. This August is the 66th anniversary of the bombings. And in Japa- nese culture the number 66 has numerous symbolic meanings that one can interpret in various ways, for example: -------------------
66 years ago on August 15, the tragic hate, pain and suffering of many innocent peoples and cultures around the world ended with the end of World War Two.
More recently, in Japan, nuclear power is causing havoc in significant parts of Japan; communities have been destroyed as a result of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The people of Japan are suffering from this disaster.
Maybe this disaster was a warning. Maybe it was to call our attention as humanity to appreciate life and look at each day as a blessing.
The show "PLANET ALERT" at Gallery Onetwentyeight is an art exhibit in which selected gallery artists create work about hope and the value of cherishing and honoring each moment to its fullest!
Welcome to Hope: Welcome to "PLANET ALERT": Welcome to Gallery Onetwentyeight.
“From the Manhattan Project just a speck of plutonium on the map of this world, easily secreting its poison to Toxi City, Hiro and Naga and, today, Fukushima, for fire and water don't mix, but they as hell did. The coast is no longer clear. Human folly and HUBRIS splitting the building block and the very meaning of life in two, this elemental self-abandonment under the prod, the cattle prod of history, of supposed destiny, of scientific inquiry, irresponsible in the extreme; oh yes, How curiosity killed the cat, black and dead. Heads down in cubicles geeking deeper, slaying the mystery, killing the magic, snuffing the beauty by turning it to Power, Force.
In the hands of the profiteers and mongers, criminals and henchmen, we confront grave jeopardy. Our once pristine planet, our nest, our whole world, is soiled and no longer a sure thing. We have sprinkled it with plutonium like an ice cream cone, with free radicals, Yes, the most deadly substance (un)known to man.” (Peter Cummings)
